Before you purchase your glow in the dark contact lenses, it’s a good idea to make sure your eyes are in good health. There is no doubt that good nutrition is necessary for good vision. After all, malnutrition is one of the leading causes of blindness in Third World countries. There is also no doubt that, in some instances at least, certain vitamins can help prevent or delay the development of certain conditions. But which vitamins will help which conditions?

Vitamin A is absolutely essential for good vision. It is a key ingredient in the chemical reaction that lets the retina convert light into the electrical impulses that our brains interpret as sight. But the same light that enters our eyes with images can also damage our eyes. And there again, vitamin A may be able to help. When light hits the molecules in our eyes, it breaks off small, highly charged particles of oxygen called free radicals. There is some evidence that these free radicals can damage tissue when they run into it. There is also speculation that one of the tissues most prone to this sort of damage is the macula, the central portion of the retina that is responsible for most of our direct vision.

Vitamin E, found in high levels in vegetable oils, might also have some value in combating retinopathy of prematurity, a condition that blinds premature babies. Tests have shown that it does interfere with the proliferation of blood vessels in the eyes of cats with retinopathy.
The B vitamins are also necessary for vision. Doing without them completely could lead to optic nerve damage and total blindness. The B vitamins are found in meats, milk, vegetables, and whole-grain breads.
Finally, zinc is another important nutrient that could prove beneficial to your eyes. As with vitamin A, a deficiency of zinc has been linked to night blindness in some studies. There is one study that suggests that taking oral zinc supplements may retard vision loss in some cases of macular degeneration.
