Extended wear contact lenses are contact lenses designed for use from anywhere from one to six days. These are contacts that you can keep in your eyes all day, all night, all day, and all night. Your doctor and the manufacturer of your contacts can tell you exactly how long you can keep them in. Extended wear contact lenses typically are disposed of once the period of wearing ends. In other types of extended wear contacts, you can clean them with certain chemicals and then they’re good to wear again.
Extended wear contacts are good for people who lead busy lives who don’t like the hassle of having to put their contacts in their eyes in the morning and to take them out at night. Extended wear contacts are usually fairly good on your eyes except that they can cause problems at night.

Any time you wear contacts overnight, you pose a potential health hazard for your eyes. When you’re sleeping, your eyelids press against your eyes and your contacts quite snugly. They don’t often leave much room between the contact and your eyelid or the contact and your eye. This can pose health problems and lead to some infections. But the technology of extended wear contact lenses is improving, so the risk of infections is a lot smaller than it used to be wearing such contacts.

Conjunctiva is a thin, transparent, protective membrane that covers most of the front part of your eye. It’s similar to the lining inside your nose and mouth and it lines the inner surface of the eyelid. The little bumps at the inner corners of your eyes are special folds of the conjunctiva that help direct the flow of tears into ducts located at the inner margins of the eyelids. When the conjunctiva is irritated by rubbing, infection, contact lenses, dirt, or smoke, the blood vessels widen and the eye appears red or bloodshot.
If you don’t get enough sleep, you can also have a case of bloodshot eyes. That’s because you tend to rub your eyes when you’re tired. Another problem is that your eyes are probably drier than they should be because they’ve been open too long. Your eyes get a great deal of their necessary moisture while you’re sleeping. Extended wear contact lenses can be a great idea for those who find them comfortable and who happen to have the right situation to use and care for them.
