Cases of dry eyes can be problematic for patients because they can cause so many problems. Dry eyes is a common and uncomfortable condition, and you might experience serious burning and scratchiness in your eyes. You might even feel like you have sand or something else in your eyes. These symptoms are usually worse at the end of the day than at the beginning of the day, if you have dry eyes. But then after you’ve had the condition for a while, it might not matter what time of day it is, your eyes simply hurt.
If you have dry eyes, you might also have problems with itching your eyes, a burning sensation, increased photosensitivity, redness, pain or a heaviness or difficulty in moving your eyelids. Your doctor might determine that there is a lot of tears in your eyes and there may be redness.
Dry Eye
If you have a severe case of dry eyes, you may have strands of mucus attached to your cornea, and you might have increased tearing, too. Those who have dry eyes often have tearing because your eyes are telling your brain that your eyes are too dry, so your eyes start increasing how much you are tearing. These are sometimes called reflex tears.
If you use the proper filter paper strips and place them just inside your lower eyelid, you can determine how much tears you are producing. You can also have your doctor administer a number of blood tests to find out what other kinds of disease you might have that’s causing your dry eyes.
Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eyes are treatable by your doctor, depending on the cause of the dryness. In most cases, if you catch your dry eye condition early enough, you can be treated with over-the-counter artificial tears, and they can be used to lubricate and replace the inadequate tear film. There are many different types of artificial tears, and you can try several to determine what the best brands are for you.
You might also need surgery for your dry eyes. If your doctor determines that your eyes are severely dry, you might have to partially, temporarily, or even permanently close part of your eyelid. This can help stop extreme dryness. If you have an affiliated melting of your cornea because of your extreme dryness, you might have to have a corneal transplant. Dry eyes can be treated, but it’s best to catch it as early as possible.
