Disposable Contact Lenses

There are many different types of scams and rip offs out there when it comes to disposable contact lenses. Some con artists know that millions of Americans need to purchase contact lenses for the health of their eyes. Americans rely on contact lenses and glasses to be able to see more clearly than we would be without them. These con artists come out in full force to try to take advantage of you and take your money.

You should always have a prescription before you can order contact lenses. This is rule number one. If a contact lens company does not require you to provide a prescription in order to make a purchase, be highly suspect of that company.

For example, if your current lens has a 14-millimeter diameter and 8.7 base curve, and the mail-order company switches to another brand lens with a 14.0-mm diameter and 8.8 curve, it seems like it’s about the same size and shape and may fit well. But the new brand is a different material and may wind up making your eyes feel uncomfortable.

Also watch out for misleading advertisements. An ad for Acuvue disposable contact lenses was corrected after an FDA warning. The ad showed a man and woman were half indoors and half outdoors on a sunny beach with no protective eyewear. The ad stated Open your eyes to the UV around you, and you’ll be glad Acuvue contact lenses are introducing UV protection. The FDA said the combination of this picture and the accompanying language implies that wearing the Acuvue UV-absorbing lens outside offers as much protection as one would naturally have indoors. But if you read the tiny print that the lenses were not substitutes for UV-absorbing eyewear, you’ll realize the entire picture of the ad.

Watch out also for misleading pricing on disposable contact lens ads. There was a consumer lawsuit a few years back against Bausch & Lomb for selling the same lens under three different names at three different prices!

Also, be wary of charges of false claims settled by the Federal Trade Commission. A number of gentlemen were touting their precise corneal molding orthokeratology treatment as a permanent cure for defective vision. A consent agreement, however, now prohibits the men from making further false claims and requires reliable scientific evidence for future claims. Watch out for misleading ads out there for disposable contact lenses!
